Bone Grafting

A bone graft adds or preserves bone in the jaw. The commonest form is socket preservation straight after an extraction, which stops the ridge collapsing while it heals. Larger ridge augmentations and sinus lifts rebuild bone that has already been lost, so an implant has something to sit in.

Bone Grafting — FAQ

Do I always need a graft before an implant?

No. Roughly one in three implant cases needs some grafting. A CBCT scan shows whether your bone is thick and tall enough without it.

How long does a graft take to heal?

Soft tissue closes in two to four weeks; the graft needs three to six months to become load-bearing bone.

Does insurance cover it?

Sometimes. A graft that treats an infection or closes a surgical extraction site is more likely to be covered than one done purely to prepare for a future implant.
