Deep Cleaning

A deep cleaning — scaling and root planing — removes plaque and tartar from below the gumline and smooths the root surface so the gum can reattach. It is done quadrant by quadrant under local anaesthetic, usually across two visits, and is followed by periodontal maintenance every three to four months.

Typical cost range

$185 – $350

Deep Cleaning — FAQ

How is a deep cleaning different from a routine cleaning?

A routine cleaning works above the gumline. A deep cleaning goes below it onto the root surface and is only done when gum pockets are 4 mm or deeper with bleeding or bone loss.

How many visits does it take?

Usually two, each covering one side of the mouth, so you can eat and speak comfortably between appointments.

Does insurance cover it?

Most plans cover scaling and root planing as a basic service at 50–80% once pocket charting and X-rays are on file. Some require pre-authorisation.
